Creating Our DIY Garden Wall

One of the things I’ve been wanting to do more intentionally is bring color and character into our outdoor space — especially in a way that feels cozy, collected, and lived-in rather than overly styled or brand new.

I had seen a few creators I absolutely adore create garden walls and vertical flower displays, and I immediately loved the charm they added to an outdoor space. Since our hot tub fence is visible from both the deck and seating area, it felt like the perfect backdrop to create something that could add ambiance and make the backyard feel even more like our own little oasis.

Of course, I immediately turned to Pinterest for inspiration and started saving anything that felt layered, warm, organic, and slightly European garden-inspired.

Choosing the Pots

One of the biggest decisions ended up being the flower pots themselves. I knew right away I didn’t want anything too sleek or modern because I wanted the wall to feel like it had always existed there — almost as if the fence and pots had naturally aged together over time.

White planters felt a little too polished for the look I was going for, so I decided on terracotta pots instead. I love how imperfect and timeless they feel, and I know they’ll continue to weather beautifully with time. They instantly brought that collected garden feel I was hoping for.

Figuring Out the Hardware

The hardware portion honestly took the most brainstorming.

I searched endlessly for wall-mounted flower pot hardware and eventually stumbled across these metal holders that reminded me of the racks gyms use to store medicine balls or basketballs. The second I saw them, I thought… wait, these could actually work perfectly.

Since our fence itself is fairly thin, we used scrap wood behind portions of the fence to help reinforce and secure the hardware properly (with landlord permission, of course).

I also spray painted portions black so everything blended seamlessly with the fence and hardware. An unexpected bonus was that it also helps water drain more naturally without creating obvious drip marks down the fence.

Picking the Flowers

One of my favorite parts of this project was visiting our local garden shop, Yarrow Nursery. After talking with the owner she steered me in the right direction.  I leaned into variety. Choosing different colors, different flower shapes, and different stem heights to create dimension throughout the wall. I also made sure to include a few trailing varieties that will drape over the pots as they grow because I love that soft, overflowing garden look.

Before planting, I added a small layer of pebbles at the bottom of each pot to help with both drainage and flower height.

The Final Result

I genuinely could not love the final result more. It completely transformed the feeling of the backyard and added so much warmth, color, and personality to the space. This project was relatively simple overall, but it made such a huge impact — which are honestly the best kinds of DIYs.
