Nothing Like Weekend Guests To Spark A Mini Bathroom Reno

The domino effect is real.

By definition, the domino effect is a cumulative chain reaction where one small, initial event triggers a series of similar, related, or connected events, often with accelerating impact. For example, Sean’s sister and family were planning to stay with us for the weekend so I was going about my typical prep-task list: changing bed sheets, cleaning floors, and restocking bathroom essentials.

As I was adding Q-tips and toilet paper to the guest bathroom closet, I found myself wincing at the exposed shelves. They were white, bland and they were naked. I then realized we could use a few more bathroom towels. But if I buy new towels what color should I get? Or maybe a pattern ? The pre-existing floral wallpaper has blue, greens and ivory, so perhaps I should use that as my guide. Or maybe, just maybe I should paint the beadboard, trim and baseboard. But do I have enough time? Can I paint it in just a few days? Okay, yeah sure. But what color?

It’s 8:40pm the night before our guests are to arrive and I’m on the ladder, nestled in the closet putting on what I hope will be the final coat of paint. We chose a deep sage green that compliments the wallpaper and totally enriches the small space. At this point I have completed 6 paint projects— so basically I am a professional. Pro tip: for the itty-bitty areas use an acrylic paint brush. Especially if your someone like me who doesn’t (should) use painter’s tape.

Once the painting was done it was time to add a little charm to the closet while keeping it functional. Incorporating a few vintage/thrifted finds, with a few new items, and personal pieces, I was able to display bathroom essentials in a more artistic way. I even found the perfect place to display flowers from my little sister’s wedding [ how cool is this? ]

With a mix of stone, wood, art and soft ivory linens, the closet no longer feels bare and boring.

Prior to painting, the bathroom showed so much potential with its whimsical wallpaper, beautiful paned window, vintage gold mirror, and original penny tile floor, but now it feels finished.

Well… kind of.

I am on the hunt to find a small wooden door, potentially with a window for the closet, as well as a piece of art to hang above the toilet. I haven’t found the right shower curtain, and my brain is trying to convince me to either paint or wallpaper the ceiling.

What do you think?
